So Moses took his
wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the
staff of God in his hand. (Exodus 4:20)
When Moses stretched out his
staff toward the sky, the LORD sent thunder and hail, and lightning flashed
down to the ground. So the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt; (Exodus 9:23)
Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight
the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God
in my hands." (Exodus 17:9)
It’s clear from the
above verses, the staff which Moses had was referred as the “staff of God”. Moses
was honoured by God Almighty when he spoke to him “face to face” and given such
a miraculous staff. What seems to baffle many of us is, if the staff which
belonged to Moses was so unique and special, why wasn’t the staff of God used
when Pharaoh and his ministry were present? The Bible is clear the “staff of
Aaron” was used in the presence of Pharaoh and his ministry (including the
sorcerers)
So Moses and Aaron
went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down
in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake.
(Exodus 7:10)
Each one threw down
his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.
(Exodus 7:12)
This makes no sense, “the
Staff of God” and its miracle was not witnessed by Pharaoh and his ministry,
rather the “Staff of Aaron” did. The Bible does makes mention of Moses’s staff
being used, but not during then presence of Pharaoh and his Ministry.
So what happened to
the staff/rod of Moses? Here’s what Rabbi Menachem Posner said:
The Midrash tells
us that the staff was passed down from generation to generation and was in the
possession of the Judean kings until the First Temple was destroyed. In Samuel I,
17:40, it is said concerning King David: "And he took his staff in
his hand." According to Midrashic tradition, this is a reference to Moses' special
staff.
It is unknown
what became of the staff after the Temple was destroyed and the Jews were
exiled from their land. (Yalkut Shimoni, Chukat
763.)
This
is also confirmed by the author of Hebrews, that the staff of Moses is lost. Not
only is the staff of Moses lost, even the staff of Aaron is lost. What’s we
have also have a contradiction.
There was
nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at
Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out
of Egypt. (1 kings 8:9)
----------------------
having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the
covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the
manna, and Aaron's rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant; (Hebrews
9:4)
Old Testament tells us the Ark of the Covenant held
the tablets only, whereas the New Testament tells us it also had jar full of
manna and Aaron's rod? The question is why would the book of Kings miss out the
rest of the contents?
Did it take 1500 years until the Jews knew what
other contents were inside the Ark? It had to be an unknown Author to tell us
