Stephen and the council

All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel. (Acts 6:15)

------------

The Sanhedrin looked at Stephens’s face and thought they were looking at the face of an angel? Seriously! Did they not see Stephen was lying regarding Abrahams account compare to what Genesis states during his interrogation?  Here’s what’s fascinating, Jesus also appeared in front of Sanhedrin during his trial, yet none of them thought they were looking at the face of God?

It’s fair to say such words can be used on certain occasions. Take for example if someone said “you’re an angel thank you for helping me with my shopping”, we understand it’s a figure of speech to emphasis the goodness that individual has done. On a human level such words can be used providing it’s specifying the good deed and action. But when we read Stephens situation, the members of Sanhedrin had no reason to see he was an honest and reliable man. Think about it the very same council condemned Jesus, why would they see Stephen follower of Jesus different?

The question is how did they know Stephen resembled an angel? In fact, how did the author know what Sanhedrin were thinking?  “All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.” That is a very bold statement to make, wen there would have been no way Luke would have known what the members of Sanhedrin were “thinking”

The difficulty with this raises problem, especially when the author is claiming to know what the Jewish council were thinking. Even if we were to take Luke’s word, how did the Jews know Stephen looked like an angel? Were angels visiting Sanhedrin frequently showing their real appearance? Why didn’t Jesus look like an angel or God when he appeared in front of Sanhedrin, what makes Stephen more unique then Jesus? Let’s not forget Stephen lied about scriptures in front of the council.

Was the glory seen on the face of Jesus yes or no?
